Laboratory Technician Nestaleen Muhka talks to colleague Chris Nethercott

Becoming the employer of choice is a key part of Anglo American’s ambition to be the leading global mining company.

Diversity and Inclusion

We have a very exciting strategy to grow the business not just here in Australia, but also in Canada and other parts of the world- to achieve this, we the best people to deliver this strategy. Our challenge is to attract and retain the best people to deliver our attractive growth story. We need to increase the size of the potential pool of talent by allowing more people the opportunity to enter the mining industry. We must be more creative, more inclusive and above all we must be more flexible in attracting the people we need.

Through our Diversity Council, we are building an inclusive work environment that values different cultural, religious and lifestyle backgrounds, providing us with a competitive edge through diversity of thought, new ideas and a different way of working. To us, being recognised as a leading global mining company means we embrace what global really means – nationality, religious beliefs, thinking styles, gender, ethnicity, age and ability.

Knowing and growing Anglo American's Talent

One of Anglo American's key strategic goals is to attract the most talented people into our business to help us deliver our exciting growth plans. Our aim is to help all employees realise their full potential - for their own personal career development and the benefit of the wider business.

Through a proactive talent management process, we identify the leaders of tomorrow and work with them to ensure they have the support and training they need to develop their skills and achieve their potential.

We place the right people in the right roles, securing strong and focused leadership for the business now and into the future. Forus, our people make the difference and we help them grow by:

  • Succession planning across the business – helping our people develop so they can step up in the future;
  • Finding the right talent for senior and critical roles, locally and internationally;
  • Developing our existing employees over time;
  • Offering interesting and challenging career opportunities to keep our people motivated; and
  • Providing a performance review structure in which all our people work closely with their managers or team leaders to set out clear development plans.
The Metallurgical Coal business has a talent management team who help us 'know' our high-potential people and 'grow' our talent. As well as providing an annual talent review process, the team can help identify and promote international opportunities for individuals across businesses, functions or geographies. There is advice, tools and training on best practice to HR and line managers, and support for all managers and employees who want to develop their own careers or those of their people.

The Talent cycle is not simply a once a year review, it is an ongoing process underpinned by our values, behavioural competencies, technical competencies and a group wide performance management process.
