Capcoal Grasstree underground mine became the first Anglo American mine in Australia to deliver A1 Safety Risk Management training to its workforce in November 2009, with more than 200 employees and contractors having now completed the intensive safety course.

The A1 programme concentrates on the steps each individual can take in terms of risk assessment, with participants identifying hazards associated with their work and looking to introduce additional controls to make their work safer.

Capcoal Underground General Manager David Carey said coinciding with the roll-out of the A1 Training, Capcoal’s Underground Grasstree Mine has now reached six months Lost Time Injury free.

“The course is about giving our workforce the information they need to make the right safety decision all the time,” David said.

“It focuses on our people thinking and acting safely regardless of whether or not their supervisor is nearby.”

The first course was run over a night shift, facilitated by Ian “Farmer” Brown, Robert Bate and David Carey, who had all participated in a “train the trainer session” in August 2009.

“An initial 20 B-crew employees from development and outbye services were taken through the course.

The level of interaction and discussion over the eight hours of the course was extremely positive,” David said.

“Mines routine support contracting workforce will also be taken through this very informative and valuable course.

“Improving our safety performance is a key element of our goal for 2010, to improve the reliability of our operational systems, our people and equipment so we continue to improve overall performance at Capcoal Underground,” David said.
