Grosvenor project

Supervising Geologist Steve Graham and Exploration Superintendent Kirsty Grogan discuss drill samples at the Grosvenor Mine site

"We have the best Hard Coking Coal assets and a unique
opportunity to develop four identical world class longwall
projects in the Moranbah region.”

Metallurgical Coal CEO, Seamus French

Grosvenor Project

In July 2012 construction started on our Grosvenor project, a five million tonne per annum underground longwall mine planned for Moranbah in Central Queensland. Grosvenor is located immediately to the south of the existing Moranbah North mine which has been in operation since 1998. Anglo American has a proud history and an exciting future in Moranbah. In addition to Grosvenor, we also plan to develop the Moranbah South project by 2020. Operating for more than 26 years, Grosvenor will be a world class operation that will use leading technology while maintaining a safe workforce - our goal is zero harm.

Future Growth

The Grosvenor project is 100% owned by Anglo American and forms a major part of the group’s strategy of tripling production of metallurgical coal from its Australian assets by 2020 using a standard longwall and coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP) design model. In its first phase of development, Grosvenor will consist of a single new underground longwall mine, targeting the same well understood Goonyella Middle coal seam currently mined by Moranbah North mine, and will process its coal through the existing Moranbah North CHPP and train loading facilities. A prefeasibility study for expansion by adding a second longwall at Grosvenor is underway.

Key Construction Statistics

  • - More than three million cubic metres of earthmoving;
  • - More than 800,000 cubic metres of fill;
  • - More than3,000 tonnes of steel;
  • - More than 13,000 cubic metres of reinforced concrete.
  • Leaders In Longwall Technology

    As a leader in underground longwall mining, Anglo American will partner with key suppliers to design a safe, reliable mining system that introduces the most advanced technology and incorporating remote access capability. With leading equipment supplier, Joy Global, we are creating our future underground mining system and together, with safety, benchmark performance and efficiencies built into the design. Getting this right now will allow us to hit the ground running after commissioning and operate at world class levels.

    Looking After Our Environment

    For the long term

    For many years our environmental specialists have been working in Moranbah to understand the local eco systems, flora, fauna and the cumulative impacts of existing mining activities. Through our environmental impact statement submitted to the Queensland Government, we have developed environmental management plans to ensure our environment is protected throughout construction, into operation and eventually mine closure, when we will leave a sustainable legacy behind.

    During construction

    We have recently cleared some vegetation to make way for site access roads, mine infrastructure and future administration buildings. Working with trained spotter and catchers, we aim to protect birds, reptiles and other animals that may have habitats in this area by finding them prior to tree clearing and transferring them to a safe location. The Moranbah Scouts are building us animal boxes that we will use to safely relocate the animals. Many Moranbah residents have offered to install these boxes in trees in their backyards to create alternative habitats, or we have taken them to forest parks.

    Community Partners

    We are a company that works hard to make a meaningful difference to our local communities. Anglo American has established the $20 million Moranbah 2020 community investment fund to deliver key projects in Moranbah over the next eight years.

    Smaller community projects are supported through our social investments and donations program.

    Our Moranbah North mine has a proud and longstanding relationship with the Moranbah State High School that creates real career pathways into the resources industry for local youths.

    Employer Of Choice

    Towards the end of 2013, Anglo American will begin looking for talented and motivated people to operate the Grosvenor mine. We have roles for people with industry experience or people new to underground mining. Successful candidates with limited or no mining experience will receive pre-employment immersion opportunities at facilities like the Mynestart centre in Mackay and Pinkenbar where you will get to try out cutting edge equipment in a large scale mine simulation environment.

    Through Grosvenor you will have access to exceptional training and professional development programs as well as opportunities to gain international exposure within our multi-commodity organisation Anglo American, one of the world’s leading global mining companies. By joining us you will be challenged, well-rewarded and provided with accommodation options that best suit your personal circumstances, whether you choose to live locally or commute. Our investment in new housing will ensure Moranbah continues to be a great place to live for our employees and their families.
