Anglo American acquired the majority shareholding of Foxleigh mine on 29 February 2008.
Foxleigh is an open-cut mine and employs approximately 250 people. Mining leases cover almost 5,000 hectares and exploration permits are held for the areas surrounding the mining leases.
Foxleigh adjoins our Capcoal Surface Operations in the heart of the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland, 12 kilometres south west of Middlemount. Being only 230 kilometres south west of Mackay and 280 kilometres north-west of Rockhampton means Middlemount residents have ready access to world famous destinations such as the Great Barrier Reef. The major provincial centre of Emerald is also only 1.5 hours’ drive from Middlemount.
Foxleigh produces around 2.5 million tonnes per annum of pulverised coal injection (PCI) coal for the iron and steelmaking industry. The mine’s production capacity is 3.3 million tonnes per annum of product coal. Foxleigh and surrounding tenements are the subject of ongoing exploration and feasibility studies. Foxleigh’s PCI coal is carried 280 kilometres by train to the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal to be exported to major steel companies in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Europe and South America.
Ownership and operation
Foxleigh is 70% owned by Anglo American, with joint venture partners steel giants POSCO and Nippon Steel, holding 20% and 10% interests respectively. The mine is operated and managed by Anglo American.
The majority of Foxleigh employees live in Middlemount which has a population of around 3,000 people. The town has great educational facilities ranging from day care to high school. It also has many sport, recreation and leisure options, such as rugby league, golf, squash, tennis and water skiing in the nearby Bundoora Dam. Apart from mining, cattle and grain crop farming are the main industries in the region.
We are proud of the mutually beneficial relationships and associations we have developed over the years with local community groups. In July 2007, Anglo American announced a five-year planned investment of more than $100 million for Middlemount.
A Cultural Heritage Management Plan has been established between Foxleigh and traditional owners (the Barada Barna Kabalbara Yetimarla People). Additional plans are currently being negotiated between Foxleigh and traditional owners (the Southern Barada Kabalbara People and the Barada Barna People).
